Scrapping Stamp Duty is now official Conservative Party policy. Speaking on why he supports such a change Jack Rankin said:
"Stamp Duty is a real barrier for so many families trying to buy or move home. Whether you’re a first-time buyer, a young family needing more space, or an older couple looking to downsize, this tax can make those life decisions much harder.
Stamp duty doesn’t just hurt individual buyers - it slows the whole housing market. People stay put when they’d rather move, meaning fewer homes come up for sale, fewer opportunities for others, and a less dynamic housing market overall.
For us here locally, removing stamp duty on main homes would: help more young people get on the housing ladder, free up homes for growing and downsizing families, support local trades and businesses as more people move, renovate and invest in their communities".
Labour failed to accept the motion in Parliament on the day.
