As your Member of Parliament, I often highlight examples I have heard or been involved in across the constituency in meetings, committees and speeches in Parliament. It brings a real life element to the work I carry out day-to-day when in Westminster.
I recently joined the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Birth Trauma, and heard truly horrific stories from mothers who were quite simply let down by maternity services during childbirth. As my wife's birthing partner for our two boys, some of the broader concerns were familiar.
Theo Clarke has been a leader - both in Parliament during her time as an MP and outside - in raising awareness and encouraging women to come forward and share their stories, with the aim of increasing maternity funding to ultimately reduce birth trauma across Britain.
While locally, I know that we are lucky that our NHS maternity services are widely considered to be good, last year the Birth Trauma Inquiry found that maternity services across the country were woefully underfunded. During the government's statement on its Maternity Improvement Strategy, I pressed the Minister over whether they will implement any of the Inquiry's report: https://youtu.be/Mwa-VLlMwUM?si=VF8J5M0TIHNSjxVn
As part of my work with the APPG for Birth Trauma, and my wider work in tandem with parents to find solutions better maternity services, I am launching my consultation for women across the Windsor constituency to get in touch with their experiences of maternity services during childbirth.
The more real life experiences we hear, the better the picture we form of where we must focus our efforts in improving maternity services.
I understand these are very personal experiences and be assured that all responses to the consultation will be treated with the utmost sensitivity.
