Around 14,000 pensioners in the Windsor constituency will now lose up to £300 in Winter Fuel Payment after Labour MPs voted to scrap the scheme in the House of Commons on 10 September.

In total, 347 Labour MPs voted to cut the payments, despite warnings that pensioners would be forced to choose between heating and eating this winter.

It comes as the energy price cap is set to rise in October.

Today’s vote only came about after strong pressure from Conservatives. Jack Rankin MP signed the Conservatives’ Early Day Motion that forced Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves to be held accountable for their planned cut to the Winter Fuel Payment by MPs.

Commenting, Jack said:

“While she spent billions dishing out inflation-busting pay-rises to Labour's trade union paymasters, the Chancellor Rachel Reeves claimed she had ‘no choice’ other than to punish pensioners by stripping them of their Winter Fuel Payment this winter, ahead of a rise to the energy price cap in October.

“Labour had access to an open book of the country's finances during the election campaign, so this is quite simply a political choice. The Chancellor cannot keep hiding behind her misleading "black hole" fallacy and ignoring pensioners who will struggle to heat their homes in the coming winter months.

“When I voted, I did so to stand up for pensioners across the Windsor constituency and opposed Labour’s Winter Fuel Payment cut.”
